The Writer's Den has grown so much since it's 2014 birth. We began as a poetry slam event in order to send a team out of Richmond, VA to the Southern Fried Poetry Slam Festival, a South-Eastern based regional tournament. It was an answer to Richmond's fading poetry slam scene.
Created by Richmond native, author, and National Poetry Slam Champion Douglas Powell/Roscoe Burnems, The Writer's Den Poetry Slam became an event for new and seasoned poets to sharpen their skills, broaden their reach as artists, and revive the spoken-word culture on a competitive level. Since then, The Writer's Den Poetry Slam has ranked as high as 6th regionally (2017) out of 32 teams, and 6th in Group Piece Finals at the National Poetry Slam (2017) out of 80 teams.
The Writer's Den quickly grew into an ever evolving collective of artists dedicated to the love of poetry as a performance art. Now, we conduct writing and performance workshops with non-profits and schools, perform at community events, and host an open mic for artists of all genres.
Our mission as an organization is always to provide an outlet and a voice for all people who haven't found theirs, are working on theirs, or echoes our own; using our craft to make statements, open minds, heal hearts use art as therapeutic process, service our community, and grow the culture of spoken-word/poetry in Virginia and abroad.
